BLUMAT digital soil moisture sensor

Measures soil moisture to provide a reliable basis for proper watering decisions, especially useful for large container plants or individual plants in the ground, such as in conservatories or greenhouses.

Assessing the moisture inside the root ball or, more generally, in the root zone cannot be done visually or by touching the surface with a finger (the surface may be dry while there is still sufficient moisture inside). As a result, watering is often done by feel or only after the plant starts to wilt. This causes stress and impairs growth.

The so-called tensiometer measures or indicates the suction force with which plant roots must draw water. This force (measured as negative pressure in the tube, displayed in mbar) reflects the moisture level: a high value = dry, a low value = moist. The measurement range is 10–750 mbar, with typical values between 100–300 mbar. The sensor can measure moisture in all types of soil and peat-based potting mixes, as well as in moderately coarse clay granules used for water storage.
